All over the world, there is an increase in endeavoring to prolong the life of coking plants, particularly of the oven batteries in order to reduce investment costs, to guarantee coke supply of the blast furnaces with a minimum of costs, and to gain time for a possible development of new, possibly cheaper coke producing processes. While, some decades ago, a lifespan of coke ovens of 25-30 years was assumed, there are already today some producing batteries older than 40 years. However, the required amount of maintenance increase considerably with a prolonging of battery life. This paper describes in detail two successful and proven repairing methods which prolong the lifespan of coke oven batteries.
