After analyzing the factors that affect the chemico-physical characteristics of lime, a few examples of its use in semi-dry and dry flue gas abatement systems are presented, both in laboratory and in pilot and industrial plants. The efficiency of abatement varies with two physical parameters - the humidity and temperature of flue gas - and with one engineering parameter - the amount of residual free lime recycled. Examples are also presented on the impact of hydrated lime specific surface on desulfurization efficiency; industrial applications in the glass industry and related issues are also illustrated. The technical and economic benefit of recovering the dry by-product as a raw material is emphasized; in particular, it has been shown that residual free lime improves the glass making process.
