Few, if any of us, could avoid the impact on our lives of the emerging economic superpower that is China. As the engines of her enormous industrial capacity grind on, China is flooding our markets with low-cost consumer goods while demanding ever greater amounts of raw materials and resources. The effects of this transformation of the world's most populous country are felt widely. At home while the costs of plasma TVs, clothing and power tools, for example, have plummeted, prices for many basic commodities that industry depends on have soared.
