The volume of treated wastewater used in irrigation is continuously increasing on the European mainland, with its progressive implementation being encouraged by the European Wastewater Directive despite attendant environmental concerns.In the rich agricultural region of Murcia in Spain there are at least 80 operating water treatment plants (WTPs) delivering more than one hundred cubic hectometers (hm3) annually, equivalent to 6% of the country's total renewable water resources.
