Water is an attractive fluid for use in hydraulic systems for a number of reasons, especially when compared with conventional hydraulic oils. In many cases the main attraction is the non-flammability of water, while elsewhere the fact that water willnot contaminate the environment or the product being processed is a major factor, such as in the food, drink, wood and paper processing industries. Other economic benefits also arise, such as the way water does not deteriorate in the same way as hydraulic oils, it is freely available. There are not usually any costs associated with its disposal should the system have to be drained, and there are no storage costs. Furthermore, water's low viscosity and compressibility reduce the pressure drop and enableenergy to be transmitted with high efficiency.
