Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) combine the use of membrane micro-filtration or ultra-filtration technology with the activated sludge biological process to treat municipal and industrial wastewaters. This combined treatment results in a high quality effluent obtained from a single unit process and replaces the conventional wastewater treatment process train consisting of primary sedimentation, aeration tank, secondary settling tank, and granular media filtration typically required to produce a tertiary effluent suitable for recycling or disposal to sensitive waters.
