UV disinfection has been used for years either in the waste water field (especially in North America) or in the drinking water field (most commonly in Europe). However, it is only recently that it has been widely recognized as a cost-effective treatment for large-scale plants. This has been promoted by severa] factors: the demonstration of the UV efficiency to inactivate chemically-resistant Cryptosporidium), the environmental advantage of UV (no DBFs), the new generation of lamps whose higher powerenables to implement large scale UV with a reasonable number of lamps.
