COMMITTEE ON CLIMATE CHANGE REPORT

On 30 June 2010 the Committee on Climate Change launched its 2nd progress report to Parliament at an event hosted by RIBA at Portman Place. Lord Adair Turner, the Chair of the Committee, presented a summary of the report to 120 delegates and looked at the progress made during 2009 in the UK compared to the targets established by the carbon budget. The report identifies a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions during 2009; however, it is clear that the level of these reductions was as a result of the recession rather than as a result of policy implementation driving reductions. Whilst this significant reduction has been welcomed it is suggested that this should not be used to offset against a slower rate of progress in the future; indeed, the Committee has identified that a step change in the pace of implementation across a range of measures is still required.
