The first photograph of the Earth taken from space on 7 December 1972 by Apollo 17 brought home the fact that we are a whole Earth. It also captured the notion of sustainability and opened up possibilities for the use and application of Earth Observation. This is how John Carstensen, chief executive officer of the Society for the Environment, opened the keynote speech for the Action Oriented Dialogue on Earth Observation and Built Environment Risk staged in Northampton over two day sat the end of May by ABE Enterprises Ltd and the University of Leicester's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security - Space Technology Exchange Partnership (G-STEP).
