BUILDING THE PAST INTO THE FUTURE

Think of Sheffield and you think of steel. Sheffield has been synonymous with the steel industry since the 18th century and the evidence of its industrial past is clear to see throughout the city. By the mid 1800s, Sheffield was producing around 40% of the steel consumed in Europe and, while its dominance of the steel industry has since faltered, the city is justifiably proud of its heritage and makes every effort to preserve the historical reference points contained within its disused steel works and listed buildings. These days, Sheffield is known for its academic successes, with two universities: the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Haltam University.
