OCC prices jump 90% on shortages, export pressure; mills using blended furnish increase virgin content

A recent run-up in recovered paper pricing is forcing some US mills using a blend of virgin and recycled fiber to ratchet their mix away from the pricey (and scarce) recovered furnish. Since June, the combined average price for recovered paper is up a staggering 89% across the US to the highest levels in 15 years. Most stressed is the market for OCC (old corrugated containers), which saw a 90% price jump over just three months. A linerboard source said, "We're using all the virgin we possibly can right now, but are limited. We'd use 100% if we could."
