A main feature of the fast-running 12 and 20-hcluster roll stands is the direct hydraulic screwdown system, whichensures the achievement of close strip tolerances and easyadaptation of the roll gap to wedge cross profile strip. Stripflatness is controlled by adjusting mechanisms acting on the rollgap. The rolls and backup roller bearing shafts with roller bearingsare mounted in two separate chocks. The vertical movement ofeach unit is independent of the other. This provides compensationfor roll wear and the option to use different work roll diameters.The ability to use various diameter work rolls coupled with fastrolling speeds means that cluster stands can be economically usedfor a wide range of strip thicknesses.
