Because of the edge drop effect in cold rolling and despite major improvements in the operation of hot strip mills the control of the strip profile is a significant aim for operators in cold rolling mills. Greater knowledge and control of transverse thickness leads to research in two directions: the study of the efficiency of control device actuators; and making available profile thickness gages that achieve good performance. IRSID and Sollac have, therefore, been evaluating the efficiency of tapered work rolls on tinplate mills, by trials on a pilot mill and commercial mill. Concurrently, they have developed a new generation of edge drop measurement gages.
