MECHANICAL drive systems, maintenance problems and solutions, and crane inspection were the focus of the Mechanical Aspects of Crane Travel Drives Symposium held in Pittsburgh from June 12-14, 1995. This event was the third in a series of overhead traveling crane symposiums. The 155 attendees represented steel producers, aluminum producers, crane builders and reconditioners, consulting and engineering companies, and the railroad industry. Major topics for the symposium were introduced through brief presentations made by discussion initiators. Each presentation was followed by open, off the record discussion. Focus topics included: types of drives; components; couplings; gearing; line shafts; bearings; lubrication; bumpers and end stops; wheels and rails; crane inspection; gear case lubrication; cables; and brake wear.
