Some engineers understandably shy away from timber because of its inherent variability. Structural and physical properties can vary substantially within an individual board, let alone from piece to piece or from region to region even within one timber species. And when attempting to ensure compliance of preservative treatment the situation is no better. Impregnating wood with chemical preservatives is not an exact science, and the same can be said for sampling and testing in many cases.
