COMPARING LAST year's forestry and logging enterprise employment figures year on year back to 2000 is not a task for the fainthearted. The forestry and logging category has been the hardest hit industry job sector in recent years. In 2000 there were 6980 employees in the DoS Forestry & Logging ANZSIC category (which includes forestry, logging and services to forestry), peaking in 2003 at 9580 and then falling back to last year's low at 7620. Back in 2000 there were 4643 enterprises (dominated by theforestry subcategory on 3463). By 200.3 this total had risen to 5262, but rather than plummeting like the employment figure, the total number of enterprises went on to peak at 5455 in 2004 and fall back to 5228 last year.
