Although the materials used in electronic elements possess superb electromagnetic and optical characteristics, mechanically they are extremely friable, and such 'brittle materials' are difficult to process. One method of slicing such materialsinto multiple slices (multi-slicing) is to use a multi-wire saw. A multi-wire saw's cutting effect is achieved by use of a slurry (the working fluid) of abrasive grains suspended in oil. Although a slurry plays a significant part in the process, the exact effect of slurry composition on machining characteristics is mostly unknown.This research, therefore, aimed at discovering the effect that slurry composition has on the process of multi-slicing an object with a multi-wire saw. This was done by conducting a series of experimental cuttings using a variety of slurries of differingabrasive grain sizes and concentrations, with all tests being performed using the same multi-wire saw. This paper explains the resulting processing characteristics and machining precision that were found for each of the different slurries.
