Pennisetum Germplasm in USA

The genus Pennisetum contains over 140 species (Brunken 1977), of which the most important is pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.], a diploid (2n = 2x = 14) with the A genome. Pearl millet is grown on over 15 million ha in Africa and on 13 million ha in India (Andrews 1987). It is an important forage crop in USA, South America, and Australia. However, its importance as a grain crop is growing in USA.
