Auto-AUelopathic Effects of Pearl Millet

Continuous sole cropping or mixed cropping of pearl millet [Pennhetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.,], occurs in regions where it is the predominant cereal, Mann and Singh (1977) found 62% reduction in pearl millet yield in a continuous cultivation of the cropcompared with its rotation with green gram, [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]. Results of another rotation study (Singh et al. 1985) showed that continuous cropping of pearl millet even under good management conditions gave 9.6% lower yield than growing it after cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) laub.]. This indicates that factors other than soil fertility and moisture reduce the growth and yield of pearl millet in continuous cropping systems.
