Current Status of the US Sorghum Germplasm Collection

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is the fifth most important cereal crop in the world after wheat (Triticum spp), rice (Oryza sativa L., Oryza glaberrima Stendel), maize (Zea mays L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). In 1992, sorghum had a farmvalue of over US 1.7 billion dollar and was sown on approximately 5.4 million ha in USA with an average yield of 4570 kg ha~(-1) (USDA 1993). The same year, 45.4 million ha of sorghum with an average yield of 1530 kg ha~(-1) were grown in the world (FAO1994).
