BC woodfiber availability adequate so far in 2Q, though SPF residual cost driven up with NBSK prices

Roundwood and chip inventory positions were reported adequate through most of British Columbia so far into second quarter. However, strong pulp demand is causing upward woodfiber price movement, while overseas log shipments, sawmill closures, and the pine beetle represent cross-currents in pulpwood markets. "I'm focused on the future, and wood is going to be tight," an Interior sub-region wood buyer predicted. "We have two major sawmill closures, and pine beetles will continue to affect the big mills in the southern part of the province."
