New aerial surveying technology has led to the wide availability of detailed aerial photography and accurate terrain maps that provide a powerful tool for site assessment. This allows housing developers to evaluate the suitability of sites and instantly determine risks such as flooding as well as issues relating to access and ground conditions. In addition, historic aerial images and maps provide information on previous land use and boundaries that can be used to settle disputes and insurance claims. The technology can also generate 3-D landscapes and cityscapes with computer and 3-D print models for presenting proposed development plans.
