摘要

Slope stability investigation of the north-east slopeat Delabole slate quarry has been carried out using distinct-elementmodelling to provide further insight into potential mechanismscontrolling deformation and instability. The case study emphasisesthe need for user awareness of potential effects of input parametervariation on model behaviour, and highlights the need for rigorousvalidation. Distinct-element modelling has confirmed thesignificance of both input value sensitivity and scale effects onmodelled behaviour. The importance of development ofrepresentative rock mass geometry is also highlighted by changesin modelled slope behaviour resulting from both changes in scale,or representation of spacing of discontinuities, and variation ofdiscontinuity input parameters. Field measurements of slopedeformation have been used to validate and ensure confidence inthe development of realistic models.
