Investland, the London-based developers, has announced the release of the first phase of live/work units at SoDa Studios in Hackney, East London. As a celebrated example of the live/work model, the units are likely to be the last of their kind as the borough's new housing policy takes effect. The success of Hackney's live/work strategy provided a prime example of the concept to the rest of the UK, attracting successful artists, designers and entrepreneurs to the borough. But the council has cracked down on developers that have exploited a policy loophole to build residential homes in previously commercial/industrial areas. As such, SoDa Studios - from one of the first developers in this area - is setting an example to other parts of London as to how live/work projects should be designed and built. Aimed at regenerating city areas, these kinds of projects generally succeed in attracting young and aspirational workers. A key element of SoDa Studios has been ensuring that the design appeals to bona fide live/workers. The most important aspects are space, and a layout which draws a distinct line between the domestic and professional usage.
