Of all the reasons for choosing timber as the preferred material for window frames, not least aesthetic appeal and easy maintenance, there is one powerful argument which has far wider implications. With growing pressure for buildings to be more sustainable and construction to have a lower impact on the environment, greater attention is being given to the choice of window framing material. As long as timber is sourced from properly maintained forests and care is taken in the choice of preservatives, paints and stains, timber is by far the best environmental choice for windows, according to the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), and this has been endorsed by the world's leading environmental groups, including Greenpeace.
