Plant parasitic nematodes in potato growing areas of Motril and Salobrena

A survey was conducted to detect plant parasitic nematodes present in the potato growing areas of Motril-Salobrefia region (Southern Spain). From an area of 2,400 ha, 96 fields, of 0.46 ha on average, were sampled. Globodera pallida occurred at 48 p. 100 of the sites, causing losses in potato yield of nearly 80 p. 100. Other plant parasitic nematodes found in soil were Meloidogyne incognita, Heterodera schachtii, H. trifolii and species of Criconema, Helicotylenchus, Macroposthonia, Pratylenchus, Paratylenchus, Hemicycliophora, Trichodorus and Tylenchorhynchus, this last genus was the most widespread in the area. The incidence of G. pallida on the potato growing system and the convenience of using nematicides is discussed.
