Ocular Melanocytoma

Melanocytoma is a tumor of the optic nerve and the uveal tract with characteristic clinical and histopathologic features. The name was coined by Zimmerman and Garron who described the benign behavior of optic nerve head melanocytomas. They chose this term as the tumor cells seemed similar to the melanocytes found in the uveal tract of patients with ocular melanocytosis. Owing to the lack of descriptive specificity of this name, other terms have been proposed including "magnocellular nevus" and "hyperpigmented magnocellular nevus."
