Recent Advances in the Immunopathology of Giant Cell Arteritis

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an increasingly common disorder that produces severe blindness and other significant disabilities. The goal of this article is to provide a framework for understanding how immunosuppressive medications effectively treat this disorder. Recent advances in the study of the immunopathology of GCA have the potential to radically change the approach to therapy, with the ultimate hope of achieving highly selective immunosuppression to quell the inflammation that can otherwise cause the severe disabilities associated with GCA.
