Vitrectomy with and without scleral buckling for retinal detachment repair in pseudophakic patients

In the current era, approximately 25% of patients referred for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair are pseudophakic.' A recent register-based cohort study of over 200,000 patients found that the relative risk of retinal detachment in pseudophakic eyes after uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery compared with the unoperated fellow eye was 4.23, representing a 4-fold increase in likelihood of retinal detachment after cataract surgery. The increased risk persisted for the duration of follow-up, which was up to 10 years in this study.
