Classification and grading system for age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), sometimes called age-related maculopathy (ARM), has been recognized for over 100 years. Its clinical characteristics were first described in 1875 and the condition was named "senile macular degeneration" in 1885.1,2 Since the 1980s, AMD has become the accepted and preferred name for the condition. Gass3 ascribed the pathogenesis of exudative AMD to choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and Bird and Teeters4 followed with a description of the natural history of neovascular AMD. The advent of fluorescein fundus photography in the 1960s and 1970s greatly facilitated recognition of the role of CNV in the development of exudative AMD.3
