Introduction Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major public health problem, because none of its currently available treatments are curative. Before the introduction of photodynamic therapy (PDT) into clinical practice, laser photocoagulation was the only available treatment against neovascular AMD. However, treatment of subfoveal choroidal neovas-cularization (CNV) lesions, which represent the majority of neovascular AMD lesions, caused vision loss immediately after the treatment.1
