Imaging in the Diagnosis and Management of Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy

Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR), as originally described by Gass, typically presents with sudden onset of >= 1 large scotomata, photopsias, normal fundus appearance, and electroretinographic abnormalities locating loss of function to the outer retina. The electro-physiological dysfunction commonly appears global, despite the focal nature of the field loss, and affects cones more than rods; 30-Hz flicker electroretinographic abnormalities indicative of inner retinal dysfunction have also been reported. Often, visual field loss involves the temporal field, and photopsias are contained within the scotomata.
