Habitat Creation for Biodiversity on Golf Courses

As the countryside around us diminishes making way for agriculture, roads, housing and industry and as the populous expands, ever-increasing pressures are being placed on our wildlife and on the habitats on which they depend. There are over 15,500 species of wildlife now assigned to Bed Data listings indicating the extreme vulnerability of many taxonomic groups. Without immediate global intervention it is likely that within the next tens of years two thirds of our worldwide amphibian populations wl become extinct. One in every eight bird species will be lost forever—this is without the added impact of global warming. Such statistics when hung out in the true light of day are deeply concerning but it does hearten me, working exclusively on golf courses, to see that many of our increasingly fragmented habitats such as heathland, acid grassland, fixed dune grassland or indeed ancient woodland are well represented and, moreover, being managed to such an extent as to support some of our rarest and most endangered wildlife species.
