The STRI's Ecology Unit, set up ten years ago in response to the growing demand for golf and the increasing pressures relating to golf as an appropriate or acceptable land use, continues to grow in strength and stature. Although a part of our work still embraces ecological/environmental impact assessments and related studies for planners and potential golf course developers, an increasing number of established clubs are now seeking our services, Within the framework for established golf clubs, trees/woodland assessments, grassland evaluations, advice on ponds and other water features, and, of course, gorse and heather are all included. Recommendations are tailored to fit into current golf course management programmes and designed to guide and direct the green-keeper's annual works programme.
