There is a long history of greenkeepers using the F-word, where they feel it appropriate! I must also confess to having used it quite a lot during my time at the STRI. So it is time to be more open and say exactly what I mean and what I mean here is Fescue. This grass will undoubtedly be part of the solution to producing sustainable golf greens under challenging pesticide regulations (where you cannot use them). It is also the traditional grass species best suited to restricted fertility and wateringregimes. These are management tools that could also be regulated/restricted in the future. Maintaining fescue dominated golf greens is not just theory; it is a reality where growing conditions and appropriate management combine to create an environmentthat favours this grass.
