Polo in England dates back to 1869 and has a military and London association in the early years. While the military are still strongly connected, the game has widened in recent years and only one London polo club, namely Ham survives. The game is international, being recorded as being played by the Persians in 600 BC, but unlike then the players and ponies now travel across the world to participate as the season moves around the globe. In this country it is essentially a summer grass sport but the season has extended from a matter of weeks to a period from April to September or even into October.
