International oil firms exploring in Uganda have denied reports of an emerging confrontation between government forces and a new rebel group intent on sabotaging upstream activities in the oil-rich Albertine Basin. Company officials reacted angrily Tuesday to a report claiming the militant Popular Patriotic Front (PPF) group was recruiting and training locals in northwestern Uganda and planning to attack oil installations and foreign workers. The report said arms, communications and other military equipment had been recovered from a number of suspected militants. One executive described the report as totally misleading, saying it related to an old conflict reported last year.
