Iran Tests Nuclear Plant

Iran has started testing its 1,000 MW nuclear power plant at Bushehr, with participation by Russian nuclear officials. The test entails using lead imitator rods instead of nuclear fuel rods. Sergei Kiriyenko, head of Russia's nuclear agency, said the plant is now in its pre-commissioning stage; actual start-up is expected by year-end. The plant is to run on enriched uranium supplied by Russia, to which Iran is to return spent nuclear fuel. Russia signed up to help build the plant in 1995.
