China’s Sinopec and Royal Dutch Shell have each committed to second exploration periods on their respective acreages in the Saudi Rub al-Khali desert. It is a major coup for Riyadh, which was eager to keep the international oil companies drilling in its vast southern region, despite almost no commercial success in seven years of exploration.
