The search is on for cleaner fuels and cleaner engines to cut harmful effects on the environment. Oil companies and engineers are rising to the green challenge. Alan Bunting reports on the first seminar to be organised by the SOE. Society of Operations Engineers president David Cox, chairing the SOE's recent seminar, stressed the growing impact of environmental considerations on road transport and off-road plant operations. Future compliance with air-quality-related emissions legislation and pressure to reduce fuel use in the context of climate change were both vitally dependent on choice of fuel and its precise specification, issues which the meeting was intended to address.
