Maximum live weight gain in the first t'ew weeks post weaning remains the goal of pig breeders and farmers everywhere, but opinion varies as to how optimum performance can best be achieved. While experts argue about the relative role played by genetics, disease control, use of medicine, health of the immune system and the piglet's physiological state, most agree that feed is one of the most important drivers. Yet there is debate here, too, particularly over the use of high specification feeds and their effect on animal performance.
