The animal health company Boehringer Ingelheim hosted an lleitis Symposium at the 18th IPVS Congress in Germany, which attracted over 1200 veterinarians. In giving an overview of this important disease of swine Dr Steven McOrist of QAF Meat Industriesin Australia summarised ileitis as 'one pathogen, several diseases'. The pathogen is the bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis and the disease is seen in chronic, subclinical and acute forms. Typically, the chronic and sub-clinical forms are manifested asscour, depressed weight gains and loss of uniformity in grower pigs and, in severe chronic versions of the disease, this is manifested as an increased number of runts.
