Experts See Positives With New Producers and Steady Old Hands

The introduction of relatively new produc- ers of crude oil, combined with steady, reliable flows from the Middle East, has created a well- supplied, diversified oil market that looks set to remain that way for some time, experts told a conference in Washington on Thursday. Excess or spare oil production capacity currently sits at around 6 million barrels per day and comes mostly from Opec nations, chiefly Saudi Arabia. Although the economic recession and its harmful impact on global oil demand attributes for some of the excess capacity, analysts said the oil markets were well-equipped to handle a future spike in demand from economic recovery or the sud- den loss of substantial supply.
