After a legal battle lasting well over a decade, Royal Dutch Shell has agreed a $15 million out-of-court settlement in a case accusing it of complicity in human rights abuses in Nigeria. The case was brought by relatives of anti- oil campaigners from the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta, including activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who were hanged in 1995 by Nigeria's former military rulers. The settlement includes establishment of a $5 million trust to benefit Ogoni communities. The balance will pay for legal fees and compensate the 10 plaintiffs.
