KMG Plays Down China Influence

The head of Kazakh state oil and gas firm Kazmunaigas (KMG) has moved to quell fears that China is being allowed to take too strong a grip on the country's energy sector. KMG President Kairgeldy Kabyldin said the presence of Chinese oil and gas specialists in Kazakhstan is negligible, despite the signing of multibillion-dollar oil-for-loans deals with Beijing, and Chinese purchases of Kazakh upstream and downstream assets (IOD Apr.17,p1).
