New reserves reporting rules adopted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) at the end of last year missed a golden opportunity to provide investors with greater transparency on how companies go about the opaque reserves-booking process.The SEC initially proposed requiring firms to provide a degree of field and country level data on proven reserves, but ultimately dropped the proposal in the face of strong opposition from the industry (IOD Jan.9,p9).
