Japan Firms Eye Potential Mexico LNG

Japan's Mitsui and Tokyo Gas agreed on Dec. 24 to buy five natural-gas fired power plants and a small related gas pipeline asset in northeastern Mexico from the Spanish utility Gas Natural, in a deal valuing the assets at some $1.225 billion (110 billion yen). The deal, to be completed in two phases, should advance the LNG trading and optimization aims of both Japanese companies, already active investors in power generation in Mexico, where Mitsui owns a 25% stake in the country's first LNG terminal.
