Sizeable UK Find for Wintershall

Wintershall, the oil and gas subsidiary of Germany’s BASF, said Thursday it had struck oil on its Blakeney well, around 150 km east of Aberdeen, in UK production license P1619 where it is operator with a 75% interest. Canadian independent Sterling Resources has 25%. The find’s size is estimated at 60-100 million barrels of oil in place, which would be as large as initial estimates for another recent UK find, Catcher/Catcher East, operated by UK firm Encore Oil, where Wintershall has a 20% license interest; further appraisal drilling there is due to restart this October (IOD Jul.6,p8).
