Energy stocks were battered and bruised in 2008 as the broader stock market suffered its worst performance in over 70 years. Of the 13 integrated oil companies that make up the International Petroleum Finance (IPF) index, seven outperformed the S&P 500 while six fell short.Petro-Canada was the worst performer among the IPF companies for both December and all of 2008. The company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) fell almost 13% last month and nearly 60% for the year.
