The US Congress is expected early next year to introduce new sanctions against Iran that target what many lawmakers view as the country's "Achilles' heel" - its dependence on imported gasoline, which at current levels of around 120,000 barrels per day represent over one-third of domestic consumption. But Western diplomats who are still hoping that Iran will make last-minute concessions on its uranium enrichment program fear any action by Congress will only ratchet up tensions and make Iran even less inclined to negotiate a solution to the nuclear standoff (IOD Nov.11,p3).
